Your fitness journey is very much like taking a long, over the road trip. It starts with knowing where you are, where you want to go, and how fast you want to arrive at your destination. The only way to successfully make the trip is to monitor your progress along the way. How much fuel is left in the tank? How far to the next fuel station? Can we make it? And that’s only one of the many issues to monitor. If you throw in rest stops, road construction, eating, and bathroom breaks you have to keep track of a lot. If you simply ignore all these things and “wing it”, you may be walking to the fuel station, tired, hungry…well, you get the point. It could be a miserable trip. If you simply ignore or don’t monitor your fitness journey, it could be a miserable trip or, you never make your destination. The key is to monitor and track everything. When you do this everything becomes much clearer. I’m eating too much… I’m not eating enough… I need to make better food choices… I’m not progressing in the gym… I need to work on my form… Once you know the data, it becomes easier to prioritize what you need to focus on to make your “journey” as efficient as you desire. But you have to spend time thinking about it… You need to redefine "hard work" to include "hard thinking.” Because usually, the hardest work is thinking of a better way to do it.
