Opus One Winery

Opus One was created in 1978 by Baron Philippe de Rothschild, the legendary owner of Château Mouton Rothschild, and the famous Napa Valley wine producer Robert Mondavi. By combining both families’ winemaking traditions and innovations, the partners aimed to create an exceptional wine in the heart of Napa Valley. Opus One was a success and has been acclaimed as a “Californian First Growth”. Opus One has 55 hectares (136 acres) of vines planted with Bordeaux grape varieties. Baroness Philippine de Rothschild inaugurated the new Opus One winery, one of the architectural gems of the Napa Valley, in 1991.

Overture reflects the winemaker’s artistry by showcasing the talent of blending traditional Bordeaux grape varieties and capturing terroir characteristics of the same variety grown in different soils. However, Overture’s third blending aspect – that of marrying multiple vintages – yields a softer, rounder expression of our estate that can be enjoyed upon release.

Profuse, dark-fruit aromas of black cherry, plum, and cassis are complemented with more nuanced notes of cedar, cigar box, and toasty brioche. Juicy flavors of boysenberry, blackberry, and dark cherry flood the palate and are braced by powdery tannins and ample acidity. The long, plush finish delivers hints of black pepper, dark chocolate, and espresso.

(Prior Release) 93pts Decanter- A multi-vintage blend of mostly 2018 and some 2017, this is a fine, fruity and extremely likable second wine from Opus. It has good construction on the palate with blackcurrants, Morello cherries and soft wood spicing with concentration and drive. The aromas and flavors open and evolve after a few minutes in the glass giving succulent sweet cherry and blueberry notes alongside some savory olive and ash elements. Overture comprises roughly 10-15% of the total Opus production. First released 1993 and was, until 2014, primarily sold via cellar door. More than 50 lots are vinified separately then blended and aged for 17 months in French oak, 50% new.
