For much of the 20th century, Scottish distillers focused almost exclusively on blended whiskies. Long before the concept of single malt caught on, independent bottlers were buying casks and saving some of history’s greatest spirits from the blender’s vat. In fact, it’s largely thanks to the independents that we have bottlings that provide a sense of Scotland’s most iconic distilleries in this golden era of whisky making.

Today, Laphroaig is known as a powerfully peaty single malt, but older bottlings like this reveal that the distillery once produced a much softer style. This legendary vintage is marked by intense tropical fruits, coastal minerality and gentle, medicinal smoke.

One of Scotland’s most respected bottlers, Gordon & MacPhail has been filling its warehouses with exceptional single malts for more than a century. This dignified old Longmorn was matured in a first-fill sherry butt and is an excellent example of old-fashioned sherry character.

For many collectors, Ardbeg remains the benchmark Islay malt. Vintages from the 1970s are particularly prized for their almost paradoxical combination of elegance and power. While there are official bottlings of Ardbeg from this era, independents like Douglas Laing often have the edge if you’re looking for interesting single casks.

Hailing from one of Scotland’s most prized distilleries, this old Brora was awarded a rare 92 points on Serge Valentin’s indispensable Whisky Fun. This 1970-vintage Brora was bottled by Douglas Laing as part of their Platinum Selection series and only 297 bottles were ever produced.
