    The '80s were a wild time! Bikes Sell // Trade Magazine The Mantis X-Frame: An Experiment in Frame Design Anyone here remember Mantis? I put this Mantis X-Frame in the middle of the TPC retail store and it got a lot of attention. If the bright multicolored paint or the purple anodized Cook Brothers cranks don’t grab your attention, then the wild X-shaped frame will.I was surprised, though, that so few people seemed to know anything about Mantis. This clearly means we need to stop and tell the story behind this bike! The Mantis X-Frame (the predecessor to the Valkyrie) was built by MTB legend Richard Cunningham and it represents an era when mountain bike design was still evolving and innovation was rampant. Ultimately, it was an evolutionary dead end, but it’s fun to look back at how this weird branch of the fat tire family tree came to be.
