"A creature or spirit in Scottish and Irish folklore that has the form of a seal but can also assume human form. Alternative forms: saelkie, selky, seilkie, sejlki, shelky, silkey, silkie, sulky" Fanciful, nostalgic and extra romantic...Meet Selkie! By former Wildfox Co-Founder, Kimberley Gordon. This ready-to-wear collection is an imagination driven brand and encourages artistic self expression. Selkie offers a range of stand out party dresses, and after party sweatsuits. With timeless pieces sizes XXS-5X they are made to keep, and pieces you will treasure forever. Selkie is a low waste company, producing small inventories to test the success of items, then using pre-sale to predict how much to buy on popular styles for future rounds. This ensures no dangerous dumping or contribution to landfill. Each collection tells a story and presents a dreamy world through its imagery. "As a young girl growing up in the UK and then in Santa Barbara, I fell in love with folklore. My love of make believe has infiltrated my work and play for as long as I can remember and ultimately helped inspire my previous clothing line, WILDFOX." In Irish, Scottish, Icelandic and Scandinavian folklore, the Selkie is a woman of the ocean who lives inside a seal skin. When she comes up to the rocks she slips out of her skin to bask in the sun. If a man is able to steal her skin while she sleeps, she is forced to become his wife and live on land. But, if the selkie finds her skin again, she transforms back into her true form and immediately returns to the sea, free. This was Gordon's favorite tale as a child, and after losing Wildfox, during her darkest moments, she lingered on it. "I thought, it's a new beginning story, this is kind of like the second chapter," she explains. "And I thought, there have to be so many women out there who want to find themselves, or are looking for themselves again, and maybe this company can be a representation of my age group, who are looking for joy later on." Like the selkies of folklore, Gordon found her skin and regained control of her life. Now, she's free. Founder Kimberley Gordon in some of her favourite Selkie styles! Click for each one. She is 5'9 and wears size L or XL. "Selkie is known for its ethereal dresses that turn reality into a fairytale. For the brand’s NYFW debut the casting was a dream come true with 12 plus models and a total of 23 size-inclusive looks, the show featured the most size diverse cast we had seen all week. An emotional performance from plus-size dancer, Arianna Davis, made many in attendance teary-eyed. We rarely see anything like this show at Fashion Week, and when we do it always leaves us wanting more. Let’s hope other brands are taking notes." - Teen Vogue"But for me, it’s bigger than bodies, it’s more about wxmen embracing the story of themselves and their own myth and fantasy. I want to ignite women to feel powerful enough to live their stories with pride, to change their lives with imagination, to get back up and go for it. Clothing is one of the greatest tools we have to express ourselves, and I think that accessible pastel, nostalgic voice was lacking in fashion before Selkie. I aim to continue to fill this [void], and to help these unique wxmen who might have lost themselves to start sharing who they are with the world." -Fashion Week Daily"It is a garment that would spontaneously come into being if Marie Antoinette tripped on her petticoat and fell into Sailor Moon’s arms. It’s cotton candy, lip gloss, and soap bubbles spun into a sheer fabric. It’s everywhere. And it’s bringing up a lot of feelings." - Glamour"Something like the Puff Dress brings a lot of attention — and of course, when I first made it, I didn't know if anyone would like it, but I knew it was beautiful. I was really happy with it," Gordon says. "It did just what I was looking for it to do: create opportunity, which creates access." - Kimberley gordon speaking to Fashionista Brand ethos Selkie is a Female startup, owned by a woman and run by a woman. When you shop, you are supporting female business owners. 40% of US businesses are women-owned. Women started 1,821 net new businesses every day last year. -Mar 18, 2020 Selkie starts at a design level in Silverlake, LA by Kimberley Gordon. Kimberley is the original founder of the former WILDFOX brand. She works hand in hand with a talented manufacturing team in China to create fanciful pieces you'll want to keep forever. Read about why we are so proud of our manufacturer, and producing with them in China! Selkie is committed to size diversity, fitting on both size small and large women to ensure better fit for more shapes. Selkie aims for cultural diversity from the inside out, today with Kimberley who is British/American, Chinese partners, and Chinese craftsmen, Selkie’s core company is a small team consisting of a diverse group of women, and continues to seek new cultural perspectives from it's employees and dedicated fan base. Tell me more... Selkie is low waste! We cut very small runs of inventory and pre sell many of our best sellers to ensure that each garment is going to someone that loves it. We do not produce mass bulk. Some garments have only 15-20 ever made! This is why sizes sell out quickly and our fans are fast to shop each drop. Selkie is not 100% sustainable due to the use of polyester, but we are consciously committed to finding environmental ways to evolve- and not just as a marketing ploy. Fabric impact is complicated, we encourage you to research different fabrications and their impacts on the environment- all fabrics have an impact unless they are vintage, so it's hard to avoid. But with pressure from you on brands you love, the more we can collectively change the way factories treat their fabrics and begin to lower the expensive price tag attached to sustainable practice. With every collection we aim to improve our footprint. Going sustainable is expensive (without mass production), which makes it hard to balance while maintaining a good price for you, our customer! With growth and purchasing power we get closer to affording our environmental goals. Learn About our Manufacturer Here! As Seen In selkie [email protected] No longer want to receive these emails?
