They essentially hijack your cells and take up molecules and nutrients like ATP, magnesium, and B-vitamins so they can replicate. This leaves your cells low on nutrients and unable to restart following infection. This could be one of the mechanisms by which severe viral infections cause post-viral illness. Viral Aftermath Long-COVID, Epstein Barr virus-induced mononucleosis, or in more severe cases, encephalitis lethargica following the flu–are all conditions that are caused by viruses and that people experience debilitating fatigue following infection. For many, using vitamin B1 in mega-doses helps with this kind of fatigue. Because vitamin B1 is a limiting factor in how much energy mitochondria can make. Without enough vitamin B1, you can never produce enough ATP, so you feel fatigued all of the time. Improving energy levels in turn always improves quality of life. BUT... A Deficiency is Created ...it doesn’t necessarily fix the immune system deficit that can happen following an infection with viruses. Why? Because you become zinc deficient. Zinc is needed in the first place to inhibit viral replication, and when too many viruses are replicating, the immune system can quickly use up intracellular zinc content. When people become deficient in zinc following viral infections it can manifest as autoimmunity, allergies, and changes in immune cell types (Wessels et al., 2017). Zinc-associated proteins help get zinc bound to viral RNA to prevent virus replication. Without Enough Zinc: • Natural killer cell activity is lower. • Cytotoxic T-cells can’t kill remaining viral infected cells. • Many genes that help with longevity are turned off. • Ammonia levels increase causing brain fog. • There is an increased IL-6 levels that lead to constant inflammation. Eating zinc-rich foods and consuming a bioavailable zinc supplement fixes these deficiency issues (Wessels et al., 2017). But how much zinc do you need? The RDA for people not deficient in zinc is 11-13mg. Keep in mind that post-viral conditions raise this daily need. Most people are already deficient in zinc due to heavy metal competition from lead, or aluminum, and consumption of processed foods also depletes zinc. The best forms of zinc are chelated forms of zinc that use amino acids. Some amino acids are more useful than others. Mitolife hits two birds with one stone by combining zinc with the peptide L-carnosine. How? L-carnosine is readily absorbed in the gut and helps maintain gut integrity. This helps zinc readily cross the gut even if you have digestive issues (Xing et al., 2019). Other forms of zinc can complicate digestive issues, reducing the absorption of zinc. Mitolife utilizes a bioavailable zinc that gets zinc inside your cells. SHOP NOW Great quality!
