GROW YOUR OWN WAY Our word of the day? Phototropism. Translation? The propensity of certain plants and other organisms to grow in response to light. Positive phototropism means growth towards the light while negative phototropism means away from the light. And our favorite phototropic flower of the season? Tulips!
Predisposed to positive phototropism, these bulbs have been known to disregard the design they were placed in the vase with, twisting and growing up to a couple of inches (!) towards the nearest sunny window. The mechanics behind this are, as one might expect, a series of a few more two dollar words. But the most basic explanation is that a growth hormone called auxin that is present in the tulip stem redistributes between the shady and sunny sides of the plant. This hormoneโ€™s movement is responsible for these acrobatic effects. Looking to best biology? We recommend giving your case a quarter turn every day. Changing the side of the flower thatโ€™s exposed to sunlight will help to counter the curling effects of tulipsโ€™ inevitable post-cut growth!
